It pays to pay attention in science class, have Torstein Iversen (14) experienced.
Torstein Iversen (14) knew both that Heilo is located in the Barents Sea, that most of the Norwegian oil found in rocks are from the Jurassic period and that Norway is the second largest gas exporter in the world.
Because of this Iversen won a bike in the oilquiz arranged by Front Exploration this summer at the Gyllne Tider concert at Valhalla. Thursday he was presented with a gift voacher and helmet, at the oil company's office in Tromsø.
- I learned quite a lot of geology in natural science last year, and it is my favorite subject. That's probably why I remember quite a lot too, says Iversen.
Knowledge gaps
CEO Yngve Vassmyr in Front Exploration says the company notices a knowledge gap among young people in Northern Norway in this field, and believe this is because the petroleum industry has not been present in the region before.
- Therefore, I am impressed that you had all the answers correct, and I hope you have been, and still are a bit curious about us as well, says Vassmyr.
Will generate interest
The purpose of the quiz are: to arouse interest in geology and petroleum sector, and thus make the oil industry relevant for young people in the north. Front Exploration and north Norwegian petroleum companies also need skilled people in the future, and this must also be built up in the region.
- It seems like a fun job, so I can well imagine myself working in the oil industry, Iversen says, but adds that he could not imagine working on a platform.
- But it does not need. I am a geologist working here in Tromsø. I had the same interest in science as you when I went to school. When I started my geology studies at university, I knew it was the right thing for me , says Trine Pettersen in Front Exploration.
